5th Grade Homework Policy Homework provides students with opportunities to deepen their understanding and skills relative to content that has been initially presented to them. (Marzano, Pickering & Pollock; 2001)
Homework Suggestions for Parents (please read and discuss with your child):
1. Help set up a consistent organized place for homework to be done.
2. Help your child establish either a consistent schedule for completing homework or help him/her create a schedule each Sunday night that reflects the particular week's activities.
3. Encourage, motivate, and prompt your child. Please do not sit with him/her and do the homework with him/her.
4. Remember that the purpose of homework is for your child to practice and use what she/he has learned. If your child is consistently not able to do the homework by themselves or the homework regularly takes a significant time to complete, please contact me.
5. If your child is practicing a skill, ask him/her to tell you which steps are easy for him/her as well as which ones are difficult; or, ask how he/she is planning to improve. If your child is working on a project, ask him/her what concepts/skills they are applying in the project.
6. When bedtime comes, please stop your child- even if they are not done. Fifth grade students should expect homework every day. As a team, we try to make sure that the total amount of daily homework does not exceed 50 minutes (which is the district's recommendation).
7. Students will be penalized for homework turned in late. Those students missing work (both class work and homework) during the week will be asked to complete the assignments during lunch detention on Fridays. Those students who have completed all work that week will be rewarded each Friday.
8. Students are expected to do the work on their own and ask for help only after they have given it their best effort. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to check homework completion each night and sign the planner once their child has completed his/her assignments. Homework is checked every day along with planner signatures.
9. If your child has an excused absence, they will have one day for each excused absence to make up the work missed (district policy).
